Synopsis
Arthur Kipps is a draper's apprentice in Folkestone, chafing under Mr Shalford's rules and courting his childhood friend Ann Pornick, to whom he gives half a sixpence as a token. A chance collision with the playwright Chitterlow brings news of an inheritance, and the newly rich Kipps is taken up by the genteel Walsingham family. He proposes to Helen Walsingham at the regatta, and Ann flings the half-sixpence back at him. Unable to live as a gentleman, Kipps breaks off the engagement and marries Ann. Young Walsingham then loses the fortune on the market, and the pair settle happily in a little bookshop.
