The ones we have lost

Laura was such a talented human being. She had a huge personality, a smile you couldn’t help but catch and a laugh that was totally infectious.

Laura was an integral part of the Willenhall team. Vocally superhuman, she led her section with confidence, boldly singing for others to follow. In her own right, she was a lead vocalist in every sense, with a voice that could truly rock the world. Laura had recently landed the role of one of the Divas in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, a part perfectly suited to her incredible vocal talent. Willenhall could not have been happier for her.

Laura has been a member of Willenhall Musical Theatre Company for many years. She was a fantastic Mama Ogre in Shrek, a vital member of our chorus and dance troupe, a dedicated wardrobe mistress, and the supplier of the most wonderful costumes. Laura’s costumes were something truly special. She poured her heart and soul into everything she created, often crafting new pieces simply because she wanted her friends to shine on stage.

Laura, we will always miss the laughs, the smiles, and that unforgettable voice. It still feels as though you might walk through the door at any moment, ready to take measurements and provide footwear notes.

Laura’s passing was a total shock to everyone, a light extinguished way too early. Rest in peace dear Laura.

John joined the Willenhall Musical Theatre Company in 1987 for our production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” where he played the role of the Constable, a Russian military official, a performance that remains very memorable. Over the years, John played many roles on stage; among them were Ito (Mame), Sir Jasper (Me and My Girl), Mr. Brownlow (Oliver), and his favourite role, Big Jule (Guys and Dolls).

Off stage, John was a dedicated member of our managing committee. He took on the role of Chairman in September 2007 and continued in that capacity until he retired in September 2022. John remained a committee member until he sadly passed away, marking a significant loss to both the company and, in particular, the committee. John will always be remembered by our members for his interesting tales and amusing summaries at our annual general meetings.

John was a fervent champion of WMTC, always expressing how proud he was of the company as a whole and our productions, without ever singling anyone out.

John was a loyal member of our company and will be sorely missed by his WMTC “family.”

Tom started his long association with Willenhall Operatic Society in 1952, joining as a Stage Hand for “Magyar Melody” and some 17 years later in 1969 was appointed Stage Manager, a position he held until 1990.

During his time with Willenhall, Tom took on many important roles. He worked tirelessly as a member of the committee; a position he still held. Tom served as Chairman and Vice Chairman, Assistant Stage Manager, Membership Secretary and for many years was responsible for all programme advertising and publicity and more importantly, providing much needed refreshments at our Friday night rehearsals. Over the years, Tom raised thousands of pounds for the company with his famous raffles which gave us much-needed funds for our shows.

For his dedication and commitment Tom was made a Life Member in 1991 and in 2006, was appointed Vice President along with his late wife Joan, becoming Joint President with Mike Barlow in 2009. In 2011, Tom was presented with his NODA medal for 60 years’ service.

Tom was a loyal member whose dedication never wavered. He will be sadly missed by all his “family” at WMTC and is now reunited with his beloved wife, Joan.
