Synopsis
The show opens outside Covent Garden Opera House, where the Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle is noticed by Professor Henry Higgins, an expert in dialects, and by Colonel Pickering. Eliza asks Higgins for elocution lessons so she can work in a flower shop and become a lady. Higgins and Pickering wager that he can pass her off as a duchess at a society event. Eliza's father, the dustman Alfred P. Doolittle, arrives to see what he can gain. At Ascot she wins Freddy Eynesford-Hill's heart but gives herself away, then triumphs at the Embassy Ball, where Zoltan Karpathy proclaims her a Hungarian princess. Forgotten amid the celebrations, she loses her temper and leaves, and Higgins realises what he is missing.
